The Hunting Channel Interview Questions
Introduction and Opening Questions:
1. Can you tell us a little bit about what your organization and what
you do?
We’ve been guiding hunters and fisherman professionally since 1979. I have always tried to hunt the
best areas available to me, and I am always researching out new areas that may offer my Clients
exceptional hunting.
2. How did you get started in hunting?
I was lucky enough to grow up in a hunting family, and I took it seriously enough that the evolution to
professional hunting was a natural progression.
Main Body Questions
1. How does a Buck’s Core Area change from early season to late?
Varieables like hunting pressure will cause Mule Deer Bucks to change areas, and feeding habits
within a givin area, as well. The weather will also cause Deer to move from summer, early fall habitat,
to more late season, wintering ground areas. This is a typical high country to lower elevation migration.
They are driven by their ability to forage more easily.
2. What things should whitetail hunters know about muleys that are different to help them score
a buck?
The big difference between Whitetail and Mule Deer is that Mule Deer will range farther for their food
and water source than Whitails typically will. Mule Deer will also migrate like we already discussed. In
some situations, Mule Deer will inhabit a small area, and move only short distances, just like a
Whitetail. But typically, they will inhabit large and more open areas.
3. What type of sign should I be looking for to find bucks?
During the early season, its more of a habitat hunt. Look for big canyon areas, and smaller, secluded
draws with partially open ridges and sidehills. These are great bedding areas. If you can find areas like
this located above prime feeding areas such as hayfields, or other crop land. During the rut, find Deer
sign. If you find the Does, you will find Bucks.
4. Is hunting in early season as productive as the rut or late season?
Early season hunting, like during the Bow season is a great time to be out hunting. Deer are plentyful,
and not at all spooked. Thats why its also a good time to hunt big bucks.
5. What hunting gear is import for every hunter to bring when hunting big western muleys?
Good optics like binocs and spoting scopes are needed in this big country. Also, bring a daypack with
food and plenty of water to hydrate yourself.
6. What things can a hunter do to prepare himself/herself for spot and stalk hunting?
Use your optics a lot to get used to spotting detail. When your hunting, your looking for subtle things,
like something a little off color, or looks out of place. Or maybe an antler sticking out of the sagebrush.
Also, if your hunting during the light of the moon, or full moon period, its important to realize that All
critters adjust their feeding patterns to the moon phases. During a light of the moon period, many times
you will not see much feeding going on right at daylight. This is because more night feeding goes on at
these times. But along about mid morning, or even the middle of the day, feeding will occur when you
least expect it. Also, use your gut. If you see some other critters like Antelope, cows, or horses bedded
down, the game your hunting is probably bedded also. The reverse is true, also. I know it sounds crazy
but if everything is bedded up, the fish probably are not going to bite either! The moon is a powerfull
thing, never underestimate its power. Learn to use it in your favor, and its a powerfull tool.
7. Whitetail hunters use a lot of calls ect. Would you try to do any calling if not why, if so
what calls and when?
I never use calls much while hunting Mule Deer. I have used a grunt sometimes, but with all the
open country and distances involved, its not required very often
