Great information here. I learned a long time ago about deer body language but sometimes you need a reminder. Thanks for the information.
This is so true young bucks move more early in the morning than the bigger bucks that is you see a youngster, wait the bigger ones will follow. The biggest older bucks seem to move by themselves smack dab in the middle of the day thats 2 or 3ish. That I know from experience. They watch from good cover the younger bucks and does early and according to whats happening in the field will they chose to let the sunlight shine on those majestic antlers. The older they get the smarter and less likely thay are to expose thimselvs. But just like use men they like the ladies and during the rut they like us take greater chances. After the morning hunt stay in the stand and even though you saw lots of does earlier and now they have dissapeared that big ol lonly buck will slowly browse around the timber after 12 noon and yes thats where you need to be to get that wall hanger.

Also a deer scrape is another way for deer to know the health of other deer sorry just thought i would add another reason. Oh, and also Whitetail Institute has a mineral lick called “30/06 Mineral + that works very well for when a good spot is found.

I appreciate your level of knowledge in the area of deer hunting tactics and treestand safety. I too am passionate about treestand safety mainly because I learned the hardway. Read my story at http://www.chipstuder.wordpress.com.
Excellent tips on tree stand placement. Our gang has a variety of locations, but mostly within 20 – 40 yards from high traffic corridors in the bush. We have a couple of stands near feeding and watering areas mostly used for early morning hunts. The placement of your tree stands can definitely make or break your season.
January is a promising month, along with February! Javelina is one of the best hunts I’ve ever experienced… It’s not the best when the hunts are minimal but its worth it when they all pick up once againb!

looks like an awesome camera but, how much is this one going to cost? hunting equipment these days is so expensive for the average consumer to afford. especially in this economy.
I believe its less than $300, the non HD you can pick them up for $159

did you run and gun with the full size ghost blind (predator 46″ high) or the run and gun blind (runner, 26″ high)? Seems like the big one would be hard to move around with for turkeys but the small one wouldn’t allow you to use a bow.
Yes the larger one is a bit more cumbersome, but it is definitely better for bow hunting

I still don’t own a trail cam. If I had property I could hunt and trust that the camera would still be there when I get back, I would use one, but other than the mid-Georgia property, a 4.5 hour round trip, I DON’T have anyplace to put one where I could reasonably expect it to STILL BE THERE when I get back. Yes, I know there are security boxes, but in Georgia, every hunter I know owns a chainsaw….

start with growing your social networks because that is the easiest and wont cost anything then look to SEO, and other white hat tricks to gain higher google placement. Research what key words your audience uses to search the info you provide and incorporate those into your text copy
I haven’t tried them yet but I’m planning on ordering the Bresser Everest ED based on what I have been told about them. They have an 8×42 for $218 and 10×42 for $260. I’ve been told by some people who really know and regularly test binoculars that they are very good binocs and are even better in low light conditions. I think you should try them out and see for yourself. You can only get them online. Amazon has them and a place called OpticsCamp as well.
The Cuddeback Attack IR is the best of all in my option , I get Cuddeback one year ago I would like to say “Worth the Money every Penny your spend”

I want a tv show of hunting lions and bears in western states with my pack of hounds and elk hunting too
The g5s never whistle I have a pse brute x shot a nice 10 point buck last fall with them without the other bucks even realizing what happened. They fall a bit but mybe an inch at 25yds but are very accurate and deadly if you hit vitals there dead. Rage broadheads ive had shit luck they dont open all the time when you make short shots and have a tendancy to not pass through with slower bows

Nice post, have up you ever used a traditional bow? I am a bow maker and archaeologist from Dublin. I recently spent the summer crafting bows in Viking LoNg house in Norway, you can read about it in my blog if your interested.
The reason I ask is that, hunting is something that is missing from my research. I was invited by National Geo archaeologist to Washington, for a Mesolithic hunt, with stone tools. I wonder what your thoughts are on that?

Just saw your story and watched your YouTube video! Awesome job! I just returned from the Oct 2017 Archery Ibex Hunt and I was fortunate enough to have both my sons with me on this hunt! I just started shooting a bow last year and drew this hunt! We ended up filling my tag and I say we because it was a team effort with my two boys! Harvested a 26” Billy at 63yds. I hope to have the video and photos put together soon! My son captured the shot with his go pro. Oh and yes this was my very first kill with a bow:)

Thank-you for a very well written and helpful post. I too have found the Outdoorsman adaptor to be the easiest to use and the least fiddly (is that a word?). However, I just got an iPhone X and so far, even with Pro-Camera, the photos are not as good as they were with my iPhone 6. I have the adaptor using the wide angle lens–should I have it on the telephoto (bottom) lens?

Wise words my friend! That’s why it is important to take your youngins camping fishing hiking anything that involves outdoors so that they start getting involved with nature, then you gradually introduce them to hunting youth camps or just simply taking them out hunting with you so they can start loving that lifestyle! Great read my friend.
This is a great post. I think a lot of hunters also forget about targeting/supporting folks from out of town. I moved out west years ago. I hunted back home, and am on completely unfamiliar terrain. It has been fun, but also incredibly frustrating. It would have been far less so if locals offered to help me:
1) figure out the tag system in our state (which is very complicated in western states)
2) figure out strategies that work for the critters in my new state blacktails/elk/bears vs. the standard whitetails/turkey that I have knowledge about from back home
3) e-scout or tell me what I should be looking for for target animals.
None of these would result in giving up someone’s “spot” or adding a number to a hunting party.
Maybe I’m a jerk, and nicer people are being offered these kinds of help, but I could see a lot of guys either not bothering to wade into this quagmire, or trying for a year or two and quitting. It has taken me 3+ years of tag soup, and research and I’m figuring things out (also possible I’m just a crap hunter), but some guidance would have cut the time and frustration down.
In today’s transient/migratory economy we are likely losing a lot of younger (25-35) hunters to the frustration of figuring out new ground.
Bro that was excellent video footage of not only your hunt but what an amazing shot! Not sure if you remember me but I shot an Ibex last Oct with my bow and was able to video it too, just haven’t put the video of my hunt together to put it on YouTube:)
Well you won’t believe this but I drew out for Unit 26 NM Desert Bighorn horn oct 16-31! First year to ever put in for this hunt and I drew it! I would like to use my bow but at the same time I don’t won’t to miss an opportunity for a monster since it is once in a lifetime:)

congrats man thats awesome! Honestly i dont know much about the detail of your hunt but if you have the time and you are scouting a lot and have tabs on good rams I would stick to the bow, you will feel cheated if you pull out the gun. that being said if you dont have the time to spend on the hunt or scout a bunch take a rifle

In the lower charts you have “Tooth” and “Tooh.” Is that the same as “TOA” above? Tooth of the arrow????

I am surprised that you did not mention Tooth of the arrow in your final review. Seems like it faired pretty well in many areas, and arguably out preformed Kudu…
I actually loved the Tooth of the Arrow heads. However the heads I mentioned weren’t necessarily the top scoring my final review was Objective and base more on my personal experience with each head .Plus I couldn’t mention every head I liked. However if I was to choose one more head to mention the 1″ TOA would have been my next choice.

If the limited the ban to those holding tags and outfitters who have clients with tags on water only during the season only for the problem units only it would eliminate all the problems. Cameras would need to be pulled by all tag holders (and their guides) by sunset the day before the season opens. No more problems at water.

This was a great read and very informative, I have been looking a few new bows myself for the sole reason that an old injury coupled with my age and arthritis has made shooting my current bow at 75lbs impossible.I have always believed that the more I shoot my bow the more accurate and comfortable I become with it and there is no need change out every time a new model comes out. We all know the guy that believes a new bow will somehow make him a better hunter somehow and he buys a new one every year, that’s not me. So I only like to change when there is a significant technology upgades or in my case I just can’t use my old equipment anymore. So my question is, dose this bow have a smooth draw cycle and at 60lbs would you be comfortable taking animal up to elk size with a fixed broad head out to 60 yards? Thanks Brandon

Very well stated, and something I’ve been saying on my YouTube channel all along. The activist crowd gets wound up over the possibility of any animal potentially being eradicated from the ecosystem because of the impact it would have on that environment. Well, what do they think would happen if we were to remove ourselves? We play an active part in the natural balance as well, and hunting is a big part of that. I’ve had conversations in which people tell me that people literally have no place in nature anymore. They fancy a world in which we keep to our manmade little boxes and concrete jungles. I have a channel dedicated to outdoors stories, mainly accounts of man vs nature and animal attacks. It never fails the majority of my comments are from people that state the human “invaded” the animal’s territory and got what they deserved 😳 I constantly make the argument that the victim did not “invade” anything. We share the landscape. It’s our territory as well, and always has been. If you go to the jungles of India, you find tigers. If you go to the shores of Alaska you find brown bears. The mountains of the west, cougars. But these animals have a range that they inhabit and don’t typically stray from it. Humans can be found in every single environment on every continent across the world. From the most arid desert to the coldest most barren tundra. And the people that live there have adapted to survive in those conditions perfectly. We’re the most adaptable species on the planet. We don’t have any one place that we belong, much less a confined box. This is by design, and it makes us possibly the most important being there is of any ecosystem. The general consensus seems to be that our way of thinking is antiquated and destructive to the natural world, but it seems to me the folks who subscribe to that ideology are in fact the only ones making themselves obsolete. I’m afraid one day, they’ll learn the hard way.
